DPD Senator Urges Indonesia to Restrict Promotion of LGBT Content

SUARA NEGERI ■ JAKARTA — Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD) Senator Dailami Firdaus has called for regulations prohibiting the dissemination and promotion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) behavior, saying such measures are needed to protect young people and uphold the country's moral, cultural, and religious values.

Speaking on Monday, Dailami said the government should introduce clear legal provisions to prevent what he described as the normalization of LGBT-related behavior in Indonesia.

According to the senator, the regulations should also strengthen the authority of the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) and the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) to monitor and restrict content promoting LGBT behavior across television broadcasts and digital platforms.

"Komdigi and KPI must have a strong legal basis to monitor and prevent the spread of content that promotes LGBT behavior, both on television and social media," Dailami said.

He added that Indonesia's digital space should remain a healthy environment, particularly for children and teenagers.

Dailami's remarks follow public discussions surrounding several viral social media incidents and the growing use of terms associated with LGBT-related issues, which he said have increasingly drawn public attention. (Hd)
