Did a Sea Monster Once Roam Java? Suspected Plesiosaur Fossil Sparks Excitement
SUARA NEGERI ■ GROBOGAN — A discovery suspected to be a fossil fragment of an ancient marine reptile has emerged in the Grobogan region.
The founder of the Village Artifact Conservation Center (Bakonardes), Dani Satria (34), recently announced the discovery, tentatively identified as a tooth fragment from a Plesiosaur, a group of long-necked marine reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic era.
This discovery adds to the growing list of indications that the Central Java region was once under an ancient sea.
According to Dani Satria, the fragment was found among naturally fragmented pieces of hard limestone. The fractured and separated rock structure suggests the possibility of trapping the remains of an ancient organism within. Morphologically, the fragment, suspected to contain the base of the tooth, resembles the tooth of a large marine predator, with a cross-sectional shape reminiscent of the enamel.
Ecologically, Plesiosaurs are known as shallow-sea dwellers who actively hunted fish and soft-bodied animals such as cephalopods, including ancient squid. These reptiles had long necks and streamlined bodies, enabling effective maneuverability when hunting in coastal waters. They are thought to have become extinct at the end of the Late Cretaceous period, coinciding with the mass extinction event that ended the dominance of the dinosaurs.
"The suspected link to plesiosaurs is also strengthened by previous discoveries in the Grobogan region, namely fossils thought to be part of the foot of a member of the Dyrosauridae group. This group is a relative of ancient marine crocodiles that lived during a time period that overlapped with plesiosaurs, making it possible that the two once shared the same ecosystem in the ancient waters of Java," said Dani Satria (34), Founder of the Village Artifact Conservation Center (Bakonardes), in Grobogan, Central Java, on Wednesday (May 6, 2026).
Furthermore, the presence of Nummulites fossils in the same location is an important indicator of past environmental conditions. Nummulites are relatively large foraminifera commonly found in shallow marine rocks. Their presence strengthens the interpretation that the area was once a shallow marine environment, suitable for plesiosaur habitats.
"The combination of limestone structure, the presence of Nummulites, and the morphology of the fossil fragments provides a strong initial basis for this hypothesis. However, further analysis, such as petrographic examination, detailed morphological comparisons, and possibly laboratory testing, is needed to scientifically confirm the specimen's identity," Dani added.
According to Dani, this discovery has the potential to open new opportunities in paleontological studies in Indonesia, particularly in Central Java, which has not been intensively explored in the context of ancient marine reptiles. If confirmed, this discovery will not only enrich data on past biodiversity but also strengthen our understanding of the dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems that once flourished in the Indonesian archipelago.
